Do Individual Accounts Have Private Maps?
Understanding Map Visibility
Individual accounts on CARTO do not have the private maps feature. Instead, they have a distinction between unpublished and published maps:
- Unpublished maps: Only visible to the account owner
- Published maps: Accessible to everyone once shared
Public Maps shared by Individual accounts are always accessible to everyone. However, this is only after said maps are published.
Private Maps Feature
True private maps are an option only available for Enterprise plans, where map access can be restricted or shared via link.
Data Privacy Workarounds
Even though Individual accounts cannot create truly private maps, there are alternative approaches:
- Dataset privacy: Datasets composing a map can be made private and non-downloadable
- Map removal: If you need to make a previously shared map inaccessible, duplicate it and delete the original. Since the new version was never published, it won’t be publicly accessible
