How to work with CARTO + Kepler.gl

CARTO’s integration with Kepler.gl enables users to create maps using CARTO data, then share and store them in their CARTO dashboard for future editing.

Connect CARTO data to a Kepler map

  1. Log into your CARTO account
  2. Navigate to the Data tab and search for your desired dataset
  3. Open the dataset and click Export
  4. Choose CSV or GeoJSON format and download
  5. Visit https://kepler.gl/demo in a new browser tab
  6. In Kepler’s Add Data To Map popup, ensure you’re on the Load Files tab
  7. Drag and drop your downloaded file into the designated area

Once imported, Kepler automatically generates a map from your data. Refer to Kepler’s official documentation for additional layer customization options.

Save your Kepler map to CARTO

Since Kepler operates client-side only, maps aren’t automatically persisted. To save:

  1. Click Cloud Storage, then Save
  2. Enter a title and description
  3. Click the CARTO button
  4. Log in if prompted (only required on first use)
  5. Accept permissions
  6. Click Save
  7. Click “Go to your Kepler.gl CARTO page”
  8. Your map appears in your dashboard under Your CARTO Maps > Kepler.gl tab as a private map

Edit your map

Open any Kepler map from your CARTO dashboard – it automatically loads in Kepler. To preserve changes:

  • Click Cloud Storage > Save As to create a new version, or Save to overwrite the existing map

Share your map

  1. With your map open, click Share
  2. Select Share Map URL
  3. Log in to CARTO if needed
  4. Click Upload in the CARTO thumbnail
  5. Share the generated URL

Maps shared this way are saved as “Public – with link” in CARTO, viewable only by those with the URL.

Delete your map

  1. Log into CARTO
  2. Navigate to Home > Your CARTO Maps > Kepler.gl tab (or Maps dashboard)
  3. Hover over the target map and click the three vertical dots
  4. Select Delete and confirm

Note: Shared links become inactive upon deletion.
