Introducing CARTO Spatial Copilot: AI-Powered Spatial Analysis for Everyone

Today we're excited to announce CARTO Spatial Copilot, a new AI-powered assistant built directly into the CARTO platform. Spatial Copilot brings the power of large language models to your geospatial workflows, making it easier than ever to analyze spatial data, build complex queries, and create stunning visualizations — all through natural language.

At CARTO, we've been on a mission to democratize spatial analytics. With AI Agents and Workflows, we've made it possible for organizations to scale spatial insights across teams. Spatial Copilot is the next step in that journey: an always-available assistant that meets you right where you work.

What is Spatial Copilot?

Spatial Copilot is an AI assistant embedded in Builder and Workflows that understands spatial concepts natively. Unlike general-purpose AI tools, Spatial Copilot knows about coordinate systems, spatial joins, H3 indexes, isochrones, and the full CARTO Analytics Toolbox — so it can help you write queries and build pipelines that are spatially correct from the start.

Here are a few things you can do with Spatial Copilot:

  • Write spatial SQL in plain English — Ask "Show me all stores within a 15-minute drive of downtown Chicago" and get a ready-to-run query using isochrones and spatial joins.
  • Build Workflow pipelines — Describe your analysis goal and Spatial Copilot will suggest a sequence of Workflow components, connect them, and configure parameters.
  • Debug and optimize queries — Paste a slow query and get suggestions for spatial indexing, partitioning, and query restructuring.
  • Explain existing analyses — Point Copilot at a Workflow or SQL query and get a plain-English explanation of what it does.

Built on Your Cloud, Secured by Design

Like everything in CARTO, Spatial Copilot runs within your governed cloud environment. Your data never leaves your warehouse. The AI model processes only the metadata and schema information needed to generate suggestions, and all queries are executed natively on BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, or Databricks.

Organizations retain full control over which teams and users have access to Copilot features, and all interactions are logged for audit and compliance purposes.

Getting Started

Spatial Copilot is available today in public beta for all CARTO customers. You'll find the Copilot icon in the bottom-right corner of Builder and in the Workflows editor toolbar. Click it, type your question, and start exploring.
